Election Contest Results
Now that every the shit has hit the fan the dust has settled, I thought I would reveal my private parts the election contest results. As of today here are the official numbers: Obama has 365 electoral votes. GrumpOldie McLosersen has 162. Eleven electoral votes are still up in the air but after doing a regression analysis, I’ve determined that it is mathmatically impossible for Maverick Sux Dixoncocks to win. So I’m going to go ahead and call it for the eighth dwarf, Hopey. The Senate is curre

Gunny G: Jim Jones and Jonestown, etc.
Last night FauxNoose ran a piece on Jim Jones and The Jonestown thing. They claimed it had new never-b4-seen photos, etc. I saw nothing new. For years we have seen both the party line article on this, and much lesser, the conspiracy theory articles here and there. I recalled that there was one conspiracy theory stuck in my old mind-housing-group about a Special Forces team that had gone into Jonestown before the media came upon the scene. A Ms Google search eventually turned up the article I had

In Their Words: Industry Experts on Why Hunting Is In Decline
In the December 2008/January 2009 issue, Bob Marshall writes an insightful and revealing look at the reasons for hunting’s decline (Why Johnny Won’t Hunt). To receive more perspective, we posed two straightforward questions to various leaders in the U.S. hunting community. 1) Why does hunting recruitment continue to decline? 2) If this trend is not reversed, what will hunting in America look like in 50 years? You can read their responses by clicking the link below. Why do you think hunti

If You’re Just Joining Us: Interview with Nutritional Anthropologist, Deborah Duchon, from Good Eats
One of my favorite podcasts is Jon Armstrong’s If You’re Just Joining Us . This episode he interviews Deborah Duchon, a nutritional anthropologist and it is utterly fascinating stuff. I highly recommend this episode. Deborah Duchon is a noted nutritional anthropologist, teacher, author and speaker, best known for her work on the hit TV show, Good Eats. She served as director of the Nutrition Education for New Americans Project at Georgia State University, in Atlanta. These days, she is studyin

Interview with Nutritional Anthropolgist, Deborah Duchon, from Good Eats
Deborah Duchon is a noted nutritional anthropologist, teacher, author and speaker, best known for her work on the hit TV show, Good Eats. She served as director of the Nutrition Education for New Americans Project at Georgia State University, in Atlanta. These days, she is studying the exotic origins of everyday foods, by investigating their un-domesticated beginnings and working forward to the gift day. Deborah and I talked about onions, Hmong refugees, black night-shade, potatoes, theater

Grading Education
Richard Rothstein’s new book Grading Education: Getting Accountability Right just got added to my short list of books about education that everyone should read. I presume that EPI has put it in the hands of everyone in Congress, but it might be worth, after reading it yourself, passing it on to a local school board member. Whereas a lot of criticism of NCLB amounts to little more than an unbalanced rant and I would say that most criticism is unconstructive, Grading Education offers a comprehen

Learning About Other Cultures at Museums
Here in rural Minnesota, our communities are made up almost entirely of people whose heritage is from either Germany or Norway. Blonde hair and blue eyes are common; languages other than English are not. So how do we tutor our kids about other cultures? Museum visits are a great way to learn about other countries and their ways of life. Currently in the Twin Cities, there are some great opportunities to tutor kids about other cultures. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is hosting an exhibi

Letters to the Editor: Ironic Victory, Mixed Reviews on Proposition 8, Very Important Initiative, Opportunity of a Lifetime
Ironic Victory Isn’t it ironic that Emil Guillermo can recognize the hypocrisy of one injustice falling (the election of a black man as president) while another calcifies (gays being allowed to marry) without mentioning that the former supports the latter (Emil Amok, Nov. 7)? Joseph Connelly San Francisco, Calif., Nov. 7 Mixed Reviews on Proposition 8 Gay marriage has nothing to do with Asian culture; gay marriage is not acceptable in Japan, China or India (Beyond Borders, Nov. 7). 2008 Election As Am Linky-loos
Thought you were done with the election? Well, the election's not done with you! The Asian American Legal Defense Fund (AALDEF) put out a press release following November 4, listing many of the problems Asian American voters faced last Tuesday. A study conducted by Filipino American orgs showed a last-minute shift in the Fil-Am vote in favor of Obama by two to one. The primary factor was the economy. Race was not a significant factor. An informal opinion poll predicted that 81 percent of "Indo-Am

Minnesota Primary Race: The winner comes down to who did not follow instructions.
I have modified my title a bit. My intent was not to slur our seniors or members of the minority community. If you read the second article that I attached the expert on this voting suggests that seniors who are a little able to deal with reading tasks and immigrants will be more likely to not follow instructions. Okay here is the skinny on how the recount will work. The optical scanners have a close 100 % accuracy reading rate. Its like 99.999999%. So if marked one choice in a block for ei
